Participation in practicals with the possibility of replacing 2 practicals and excused non-participation 1 absence. Credits will be given to the student who does obtain more than 51% score in Credit test written in 13th week of the semester and successfully pass an exam | |
Learning outcomes | |
The curriculum of practicals is focused on breeding and clinical diagnosis, etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, therapy and prevention of non-infectious, infectious and parasitic diseases of exotic birds. As part of the practicals, students will be provided with practical skills in clinical and laboratory diagnostics, hematological procedures, necropsy, drug administration and preventative measures most commonly used in avian species practices. |

Brief outline of the course | |
The subject outline includes the following: history and presence of breeding of exotic birds; taxonomy and classification of exotic birds; basics of anatomy and physiology of exotic birds; breeding and nutrition basics; overview of the most common diseases – non-infectious, infectious and parasitic; manipulation techniques and restrain of exotic birds; procedures used in clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic approach in exotic birds; basic diagnostic methods (hematological, biochemical, parasitological, cytological, endoscopy, necropsy); methods and principles of drug administration (individual and on a flock basis); intensive patient care (hospitalization, first aid approach); reproduction in exotic birds, sex determination, rearing of fledglings methods of identification of exotic birds (leg rings, microchip, tattoo, etc.) |

1. The history and presence of husbandry and breeding in exotic birds 2. Overview and species taxonomy of exotic birds 3. Basics of anatomy and physiology of exotic birds 4. The basics of breeding in exotic birds 5. The basics of nutrition of exotic birds 6. Overview of the most common diseases – non-infectious, infectious and parasitic 7. Restraint and fixation techniques used in exotic birds 8. Procedures used in clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic approach in exotic birds 9. Common diagnostic methods (hematological, coprological, cytology, endoscopy, diagnostic dissection) 10. Routes and principles of drug administration in exotic birds (individual and collective approach) 11. Intensive patient care (hospitalization, first aid principles) 12. Reproduction in exotic birds, sex determination 13. Identification of exotic birds, law legislation (rings, microchip, tattoos and others) |
