CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE | |
Students have to be familiar with the basics of podiatry, have a good overview of the anatomy of the hoof, suspensory apparatus of the digit and pedal bone, horse limbs conformation, hoof shape irregularities, hoof trim, forging of the hoof shoe, methods of the shoeing and hoof diseases. | |
Learning outcomes | |
Finally the students have to be able to assess lameness and conformation of the horse, mishape of the hoof form, be familiar with the basic hoof trim, have an oveview of the shoe types and their indications in the solution of the bad conformation or in the treatment of diseases if the hoof and autopodium. |

Course syllabus | |
Lectures (1 hour) 1. Anatomy and physiology of the hoof. 2. Anatomy and physiology of the suspensory appratus of the digit. 3. Assessment of the limbs conformation and the hoof form. 4. Lameness diagnostic. 5. Hoof trim. 6. Forging of the shoe and the process of the shoeing. 7. Horn capsule diseases. 8. Pododermatitis. 9. Hoof wounds. 10. Acute laminitis 11. Chronic laminitis. 12. Athropaty, desmopaty, tendinopaty a fractures in the hoof. 13. Foals hoof problems. Practical exercise (2 hours): 1. Hoof dissection. 2. Suspensory appratus dissection. 3. Practical assessment of the hoof shape and the limbs conformation. 4. Lameness diagnostic. 5. Hoof trim. 6. Forging and fitting of the shoe. 7. Hoof bandage. 8. Hoof wall and sole resection. 9. Punction of the synovial organs in the hoof. 10. Diagnostic and therapeutic anesthesia of the hoof. 11. Physical examination of the hoof. 12. X-ray examination of the hoof. 13. Utrasonographic examination of the hoof. |

Conditions for completion of course | |
Content prerequisite: Anatomy, Physiology, General surgery and anesthesiology Continuous assessment: Assessment of the limbs conformation and description of the shape of the hoof, the evaluation of the type and grade of lameness, choice of the shape and indication of the shoe and type of the shoeing. Conditions for completion of course: Students have to be familiar with the basics of podiatry, have a good overview of the anatomy of the hoof, suspensory apparatus of the digit and pedal bone, horse limbs conformation, hoof shape irregularities, hoof trim, forging of the hoof shoe, methods of the shoeing and hoof diseases. Final assessment: Oral and practical exam: 3 credits
