Brief outline of the course | |
Students will be trained by practical dissections to know bees anatomy, to recognise infective or non-infective causative agents of honey bees diseases, parasitological examination of bees and bee colony, clinical routine methods of examination, sampling methods and pathogen determination and principal measures of therapy and prevention of bee diseases and clinical bee colony inspection. |

Course curriculum List of lectures: 1. History of honeybees, past and future 2. Beekeeping, the importance of honeybees in the nature and agriculture, honeybee products - characterisation 3. Honey bee family - structure, behaviour, age-related activities, pheromones 4. Anatomy, physiology, development and nutrition of honey bees 5. Diseases of honey bees – Sacbrood and other virus diseases - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 6. Diseases of honey bees – American and European Faulbrood, Chalkbrood and Stonebrood - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 7. Diseases of honey bees - Nosema and Amoeba diseases - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 8. Diseases of honey bees - Tracheal mite - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 9. Diseases of honey bees – Varroa destructor - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 10. Diseases of honey bees – Topilaelaps and Small hive beetle - cause, occurrence, symptoms, prevention, therapy 11. Pests – insects, birds and mammals 12. Noninfection diseases – adult and honeybee brood 13. Honey bees poisoning - pesticides, plants and environment List of practical courses: 1. The diagnostic of bacterial diseases - American foulbrood - cultivation, staining procedures, biochemical tests, microscopic examination, film 6. The diagnostic of bacterial diseases - European foulbrood - cultivation, staining procedures, biochemical tests, microscopic examination, film 7. The diagnostic of fungal diseases – Chalkbrood and Stonebrood - cultivation, staining procedures, microscopic examination 8. Comparative symptoms of various brood diseases of honey bees 9. The diagnostic of parasitic diseases - Nosema and Amoeba diseases - dissection of alimentary channel, separation of mid-gut and Malpighian tubules, microscopic examination. 10. The diagnostic of parasitic diseases – Tracheal mite - dissection and separation of trachea, microscopic examination, film 11. The diagnostic of parasitic diseases – Varroa destructor - detection of Varroa from debris, brood and honey bees, microscopic examination, film 12.
