Learning outcomes
On succesful completion of the course:
Knowledge The student:
Has knowledge of the basic structure and physiology of the different groups of animals at the different levels of organisation, from genes to organism, within an ecological perspective.
Has knowlege of the main physiological processes and mechanisms in animals, such as osmoregulation, metabolism, thermoregulation, circulation, respiration, reproduction and digestion.
Can update his/her knowledge in the field of Animal Physiology.
Skills The student:
Can scientifically report, using proper scientific terminology, results obtained from basic physiology experiments.
Can collect and use relevant published information for the interpretation of observations obtained from laboratory work.
Can reflect upon their observations obtained after performing basic physiology techniques.
General Competence The student:
Knows and understands the risks and ethics when working in an animal physiology laboratory.
Can communicate results and theories in writing.
Can exchange opinions with fellow students and work alone or as part of a group.
Is familiar with new thinking and innovation processes in the field of Animal Physiology.
Brief outline of the course
The course cover the following main topics:
Fundamentals like animal form and function (vertebrates and invertebrates), transport of solutes and water
Internal transport like respiration and circulation, oxygen and carbon dioxide
Water, salts and excretion including osmoregulation
Food, energy and temperature including nutrition, feeding, digestion, metabolism and thermo regulation
Integrating systems like sensory processes, endocrine and neuroendocrine physiology
Movement and muscle including motor basis and structure
Conditions for completion of course
Continuous assessment:
Weekly lectures with related group work, multiple choice tests, and laboratory exercises.
Two assessment tasks must be approved:
Assessment task 1 (AT1)
2 multiple choice tests, each with requirements for 95% correct answers for approval (= to be able to submit)
Unlimited number of attempts to complete these two tests.
Assessment task 2 (AT2)
Approval requires participation in 2 of 3 laboratory exercises, included submission of related report with correct structure, as well as answering all questions and elements stated in the lab manual.
Minimum 1 of 3 laboratory excercises will be carried out as a digital simulation in Labster.
Conditions for completion of course:
Compund evaluation, grading scale Letter grades
Assessment Task 1, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
Assessment Task 2, comprises 0/100 of the grade, grading scale Approved/ Not approved.
Written Examination, 5 hours, comprises 100/100 of the grade, grading scale Letter grades.
Final assessment:
