Learning outcomes
The subject provides basic and specialized knowledge needed to master methods for effective assessment and treatment of patients with various pathological conditions of the nervous system.
Brief outline of the course
Neurological examination focusing on the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves. Clinical and neurological diagnosis of neurological disorders in dogs and cats. Sophisticated methods of diagnosis and therapy. Surgical and non-surgical therapy. Case studies.
Course syllabus
Lectures 1. Signalment history, clinical presentations, differential diagnoses. 2. Functional and dysfunctional neuroanatomy. 3. Performing neurological examination. 4. Neuroimaging. 5. Encephalopathies. 6. Management of head trauma. 7. Seizures and narcolepsy. 8. Cerebellar diseases and tremor syndrome. 9. Vestibular diseases, vestibulocochlear nerve dysfunctions. 10. Myelopathies, diseases of the spinal cord. 11. Management of the geriatric patient. 12. Myopathies and junctionopathies. 13. Neuropharmacological strategies.
Practical exercises 1. Musculoskeletal system vs. nervous system. 2. Care of the neurological patient and physical therapy. 3. Neurotoxicological syndromes. 4. Lesion localisation. 5. Hearing and balance disorders. 6. Congenital and developmental anomalies of the CNS. 7. Immune-mediated and infectious CNS diseases. 8. Neuropharmacology and neuroanatomy of normal urination. 9. Peripheral nerve diseases 10. Dyskinesia and tremor. 11. Assistance devices and their use in the rehabilitation of neurological patients. 12. Neuromuscular diseases. 13. Alternative and adjuvant options for therapy of neurologially impaired patients
