CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE
Fulfilment of conditions for credit according to actual Organisation and study schedule guidelines
of the UVMP in Košice.
1. Active participation at the practical lessons, students may miss at the maximum three practical
lessons per semester, one of them may be omitted without compensation, the other must be
substituted according to an agreement with the teacher.
2. Successfully completed credit tests and final exam.
Learning outcomes
The student will obtain general knowledge about nursing reptiles in exotic pet practice:
-providing nursing care to hospitalised patients, including patient monitoring and health checking, feeding, etc.
administering treatments including injections, tablets, fluids.
-performing diagnostic tests, e.g. blood sampling
-preparing animals for surgery
-assisting veterinary surgeons with operations
-communicating with pet owners
-educating pet owners

Course syllabus
1.) General introduction, classification of most common species of reptiles kept in captivity, husbandry and nutrition.
2.) Anatomy and physiology of reptiles. Autopsy.
3.) Handling and restraint of reptiles, history taking and protocols. Basic clinical examination of reptile patient. Hospitalisation.
4) Special imaging techniques used in reptiles, X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy.
5) Most common drugs used in reptiles and routes of application. Practical fluid therapy, critical care of anorectic patient.
6) Collection of biological samples (blood, faeces etc.) Practical laboratory techniques.
7.) Basic clinical techniques used in reptiles: enema, wound management, bandaging, catheter placement (i.v., i.o.) euthanasia, etc.
8.) Anaesthesia and analgesia in reptiles. Surgical nursing. Patient preparation and monitoring. Postoperative care.
9.) Diseases of lizards, patient demonstration.
10.) Diseases of chelonians, patient demonstration.
11.) Diseases of snakes, patient demonstration.
12.) Reproduction, reproductive disorders, egg incubation, paediatrics.
13.) Legal and legislative standards, CITES.
