Learning outcomes
The study of this subject will result in the acquisition of the most up-to-date theoretical information on the regulation of reproductive hormones at the molecular level, which graduates will be able to use in the implementation of the experimental part of their dissertation or in possible consulting activities for breeders, or in the actual application of the acquired methodologies on commercial farms in order to increase the efficiency of livestock production.
Brief outline of the course
Signaling molecules (endocrine hormones, tissue hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors and eicosanoids) and their importance in the regulation of reproductive functions. Principles of hormone regulation at the level of hormone-target cell interaction - hydrophilic hormones (amino acid derived), lipophilic (cholesterol derived). Hormone-receptor interaction, cellular response (signal transduction, transcription of genetic information). Hypothalamic-pituitary axis (gonadoliberins, gonadotropins) and its importance in the regulation of genital function in males and females. Male and female steroid hormones and their function. Hormonal regulation of the sexual cycle in different animal species. Hormonal regulation of estrus synchronization in different animal species.
