CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE
Lecture / Exercise
30 hours of lectures, 100 hours of practical teaching and 150 hours of self-study. Presentation method, in case of unfavourable epidemiological situation the possibility of online lectures.
In order to pass the course, the student must have active participation in lectures and exercises. A
prerequisite for passing the examination is the preparation and defense of a seminar paper on a topic assigned by the supervisor (in the range A-E), which is the result of self-study. The examination is awarded on the basis of an assessment of the knowledge acquired (in the A-E range).
Learning outcomes
The graduate of the profile course of clinical microbiology has extensive professional knowledge in the field of aetiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis and treatment of new and re-emerging
diseases of microbial aetiology. It also aims at acquiring the latest theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of modulation of the dysbiotic microbiota in favour of its natural composition. It will also gain knowledge of synthetic drugs as well as biotechnological and natural substances useful in the prophylaxis and therapy of infectious diseases. In the context of the characterization and laboratory diagnosis of disease agents and their virulence factors, the graduate will master modern methods of molecular biology as well as classical microscopic,
biochemical and serological examinations. They are also able to design, manage and objectively evaluate scientific experiments and implement advanced bioinformatics methods and procedures. The student is able to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of using various model objects for the study of bacterial interactions, properties of microorganisms and their relationships with the host, mechanisms of action of drugs and beneficial bacteria.
He/she is technically proficient not only in routine laboratory procedures, but also in working with software-intensive instrumentation in the microbiology laboratory. The learning outcomes are verified by the preparation of a seminar paper, its defence and a final examination.
Brief outline of the course
Clinically important representatives of bacterial, viral and mycotic diseases of animals and humans. Etiopathogenesis of diseases of microbial etiology with a focus on individual organ systems of the
individual. The role of biofilms in the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Methods of laboratory diagnostics of infectious disease agents of microbial etiology and their virulence factors - phenotypic methods, molecular genetic methods and others. Methods of susceptibility testing, interpretation of results and clinical use of antibiotics. Possibilities of application of NGS in clinical microbiology (determination of species, strain/virulence, antimicrobial resistance). Importance and role of stable microbiocenoses in the organism of an individual. Utilization of beneficial bacteria and innovative bioactive agents in medical applications in the management of microbial infections. Use of cell lines and animal models in biomedical research (host-pathogen interactions, development of new drugs).
