CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE
In order to pass the course, the student must have active participation in lectures and exercises. A prerequisite for passing the examination is the preparation and defense of a seminar paper on a topic assigned by the supervisor (in the range A-E), which is the result of self-study. The examination is awarded on the basis of an assessment of the knowledge acquired (in the A-E range).
Learning outcomes
Knowledge: The student has basic theoretical knowledge of microbial genetics and genomics, knows the mechanisms of information transfer from DNA to proteins and the multiple levels at which gene expression can be regulated. Skills. Competences. The learning outcomes are verified by the preparation of a seminar paper, its defence and a final examination.
Brief outline of the course
Central dogma of molecular genetics (DNA replication, RNA transcription, protein synthesis). Control and regulatory mechanisms of gene expression in bacteria. Mechanisms of mutation and exchange of genetic information between microorganisms. Structure, replication and transcription of viral genomes. Methods of analysis related to the elucidation of phenotype and their relationship to the genotype of microorganisms. Modern methods of genetic analysis: genetic mapping and construction of microbial strains, identification of genes and mutations
in sequences of microorganisms using bioinformatic approaches.
