CONDITIONS FOR COMPLETION OF COURSE
Attending lectures and practical exercises, active participation in practical exercises.
Demonstration of the required skills and theoretical knowledge, which are necessary for the subject. On the practical exercises, you need to bring work clothes and shoes, as we work with animals.
Written elaboration of a literature review on embryo transfer in selected animal species.
Successful passing of the final exam.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student acquires practical skills in obtaining oocytes and embryos.
Application of the superovulatory reaction of animals after the application of gonadotropic hormones. Knowledge mechanisms of oocyte maturation and morphological-functional states of oocytes and early embryos.
After completing the subject, the student will acquire manual skill in handling oocytes
and embryos in laboratory conditions. The acquired knowledge will create prerequisites for his
successful application in commercial or experimental practice implementing biotechnical or
biotechnological methods.
Brief outline of the course
Course contents:
- History and importance of assisted reproduction for veterinary medicine and for commercial use.
- Embryo transfer in individual species of animals (cow, mare, pig, small ruminants, laboratory and wild animals). Knowledge of material and technical security, methodological procedures.
- Micromanipulations with gametes and early embryos (oocyte aspirations, in vitro fertilization,
cryopreservation of zygotes, bisection, sexation, cloning, production of transgenic individuals).
- Ethical and veterinary health conditions of handling gametes and early embryos.
