Lectures:
Lecture: 1. From Aristotle to today – the history of animal experimentation.
Lecture: 2. Animal models and their use in biomedical research. Animal ethics and welfare. Alternatives to animal experimentation.
Lecture: 3. International practice and legislation.
Lecture: 4. Present role of laboratory animals.
Lecture: 5. Applying the 3Rs in project design.
Lecture: 6. Human endpoints and clinical experiments in animals. Study design, statistics for data evaluation. Case studies and class discussions to provide materials and ideas for school presentations.
Practicals:
Environmental requirements for individual species.
Behavioural ecology in animal welfare.
Strategic planning for research programmes.
Designing in-vivo experiments.
Case studies of animal welfare issues.
Anatomy and physiology of experimental animals.
Experimental design and application of the 3Rs.
Collection and processing of samples for clinical trials.
