Student will obtain basic theoretical knowledges and practical skills in manipulation, fixation, diagnostics and therapy of most common medical problems seen in different small mammals species reared as pet animals, as well as an animals used in experimantal studies. |
1. Lecture: Introduction. Basic anatomy, physiology and husbandry. Practice: Physical examination, restraint, blood and cytology work-up. 2. Lecture: Basic approach to veterinary care. Main aspects of nutrition, nutritional disorders. Practice: Therapeutics commonly used in small mammals. Drug administration. 3. Lecture: Gastrointestinal physiology and nutrition. Gastrointestinal diseases. Practice: Blood sampling, haematology and biochemistry profiles. Interpretation of blood results 4. Lecture: Dermatologic diseases Practice: Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the skin disorders. Demonstration of patients 5. Lecture: Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases Practice: Diagnostic imaging. Clinical and treatment techniques 6. Lecture: Anaesthesia, analgesia and sedation. Neoplastic disorders Practice: Anaesthesia induction. Tumors of different organ systems. Tumor removal. 7. Lecture: Disorders of the urinary and reproductive system Practice: Urine analysis, catheterization, cystocentesis. Surgical techniques and common procedures in reproductive system (castration, spaying) 8. Lecture: Dentistry. Dental diseases Practice: Diagnostic approach to dental problems. Teeth correction. Clinical presentation by species 9. Lecture: Infectious diseases of small mammals. Prophylaxy, preventative measures Practice: Infectious diseases – clinical picture. Diagnostic and therapeutic approach 10. Lecture: Orthopedics and surgery in small mammals Practice: Soft tissue surgery. Fractures. Demonstration of patients 11. Lecture: Emergency and critical care of small mammals Practice: Shock and fluid therapy 12. Lecture: Musculoskeletal and neurologic diseases. Behavioural disorders.
